Phones, Screens, and the Real Reason They Wreck Sleep
Blue light is only half the story. The other half is dopamine — and it is the more dangerous half.
We have all been told blue light suppresses melatonin. It does — modestly. But the bigger threat your phone poses to sleep is psychological, not photochemical.
The dopamine problem
Each scroll, like, and notification delivers a small dopamine hit. Dopamine raises arousal and suppresses the adenosine signalling that builds sleep pressure. You are not just delaying sleep — you are actively erasing the drive to sleep.
What a 'night mode' filter cannot fix
Warm-tinting your screen removes blue wavelengths but leaves the dopamine engine intact. Studies comparing night-mode users to people who stop screens entirely show no meaningful difference in sleep latency for the filter group.
The intervention that works
- Phone out of the bedroom — physically, not just face-down.
- Replace with an analog alarm clock.
- If you must read, use an e-ink device with the backlight off.
One week of this is usually enough to feel the difference. Two weeks is enough to measure it on any wearable.
